Green Skills Hub: learning eco-farming with Touch The Slum
To mark World Environment Day 2025, Hands for You Foundation joined a two-day practical training workshop at Mikisa Model Farm in Luweero, hosted by our partner Touch The Slum under their Green Skills Hub Project. The goal: equip our team with hands-on skills to help youth become resilient, innovative and community-focused agents of change.
Green skills are more than tools — they are lifelines for a sustainable future.
What we set out to do
- Equip our team with green skills to train youth in sustainable livelihoods.
- Promote environmental consciousness through practical eco-farming.
- Demonstrate waste-to-resource solutions using recycled materials.
- Explore community partnerships focused on youth development and climate action.
Two days, hands in the soil
Day one began with a tour of Mikisa Model Farm and an introduction to the Green Skills Hub concept, followed by live demonstrations of kitchen farming using recycled sacks and bottles — cutting, perforating and preparing containers, then transferring seedlings from the nursery bed. We got our hands dirty establishing demo garden beds and learning composting and organic soil preparation.
Day two turned to application and ideas — discussions on the role of youth in climate mitigation, shared reflections between the H4U and Touch The Slum teams, and a commitment from our side to establish a well-built garden for green action in Bweyogerere.
What we took home
- A team trained and confident in hands-on eco-skills.
- Deeper awareness of climate-resilient agriculture using recycled waste.
- Fresh energy to turn eco-farming into small income-generating activities.
Our four-person delegation — John-Kellan Tugume (Founder & CEO), Vanessa Nandudu (Executive Director & Co-Founder), Diana Nakitto (Innovations Manager) and Ritah Tugume (Associate) — left with new relationships and a renewed commitment to invest in youth and practical eco-education.
